Gingivectomy: when it may be indicated

The aim is to create a gum shape that can be maintained more easily and monitored more clearly over time. Depending on the case, the tooth may appear longer because the gum margin has been repositioned.
This is not an automatic choice. It should be considered only after a clinical, periodontal and, when needed, radiographic assessment.
How Gingivoplasty Is Performed
Before the procedure, a session of Professional Oral Hygiene is often recommended to reduce plaque and tartar and prepare the tissues.
Gingivoplasty is usually performed under Local Anaesthesia. The dentist reshapes the gum according to the treatment plan defined after diagnosis. In some cases, a periodontal dressing may be applied to protect the treated area during the first healing phase.
In the following days, it is important to follow the instructions carefully: soft food, gentle oral hygiene, scheduled checks and care not to irritate the gum.
Initial healing usually takes place over the first few weeks. Full tissue stabilisation may take longer and depends on the extent of treatment, the initial condition and the individual healing response.
