What Is a Dental Filling?
A Dental Filling is a fundamental treatment used to restore a tooth damaged by Tooth Decay. After removing the decayed tissue, the dentist rebuilds the affected part of the tooth with a suitable material, with the goal of restoring Shape, Function and Aesthetics.
Tooth Decay can develop when enamel is weakened by acids, bacterial plaque or insufficient oral hygiene. If left untreated, decay may progress toward the dentin and, in more advanced cases, reach the dental pulp, commonly known as the nerve. This can cause pain, inflammation or infection.
For this reason, early diagnosis and careful planning can make an important difference. At FreeSmile, our goal is to preserve as much Natural Tooth Structure as possible and choose the most suitable solution for each individual case.
Today, Dental Fillings are mainly made with aesthetic and biocompatible materials, such as Composite or, in selected cases, Ceramic.
Dental Amalgam, widely used in the past, is now strongly restricted in Europe for reasons related to Mercury, health and the environment. When clinically appropriate, modern materials are preferred because they are more aesthetic and respectful of the dental tissues.
- Composite Fillings: Composite allows the dentist to achieve a colour that is very similar to the natural tooth. The material is made of a reinforced resin with specific particles and is applied directly into the cavity after the Tooth Decay has been removed. This solution is especially indicated for superficial or moderate decay, when a good amount of Natural Tooth Structure can still be preserved.
- Ceramic Dental Inlay: A Ceramic Dental Inlay is a more advanced solution, usually indicated when the tooth is more compromised and a simple filling may not provide sufficient long-term resistance. The inlay is designed and produced in a dental laboratory using resistant, precise and aesthetic materials. At FreeSmile Rome Prati, when necessary, we evaluate Ceramic solutions to achieve stability, precision and a natural-looking result.

A Composite Restoration may be indicated in cases of superficial or moderate Tooth Decay, small fractures, old fillings that need replacement or localized aesthetic defects.
This technique can help restore both Masticatory Function and Dental Aesthetics, while avoiding more invasive treatments when they are not necessary.
The correct choice always depends on several factors: the amount of healthy tooth structure remaining, the position of the tooth, the chewing load and the quality of the patient’s oral hygiene.
At FreeSmile, we follow a simple principle: Understand Before You Decide. First we evaluate the problem, then we choose the most conservative and reliable solution for the patient.
