The Christmas period and winter holidays present numerous risks for your teeth and oral health. Protect your teeth! This refers both to a higher intake of sugary foods, which harm the teeth, and to winter sports like skiing and ice skating, which increase the risk of dental fractures
Several studies show that fractures to incisors increase during the winter (by 1 to 3% compared to the rest of the year), especially amongst children. According to the latest available data, there are at least 1,500,000 children aged between 0 and 14 in Italy who have suffered dental trauma. Children with protruding teeth are at a higher risk of fractures, as their teeth are more exposed during falls on ice or snow.
The dentist must remind the young patient’s parents that dental trauma, even to milk teeth, can cause serious structural and functional problems for the permanent teeth that will eventually replace them. It is therefore vital to pay special attention to protecting children’s milk teeth, as their health will directly impact the proper development of their permanent teeth.
