Dental Bone Regeneration and Reconstruction in Rome
Loss of bone in the upper or lower jaw can make dental implant treatment more complex. This may happen after tooth loss, periodontal disease, infections, trauma or long periods without teeth.
Dental bone regeneration aims to rebuild or increase bone volume where a stable foundation is needed for future implant treatment. It is not the same procedure for every patient. The decision depends on diagnosis, three-dimensional imaging, gum condition, general health and the final prosthetic plan.
Upper Jaw, Lower Jaw and Dental Implants
Dental implants are placed in the bone of the upper or lower jaw. They act as artificial roots and can later support crowns, bridges or fixed prostheses.
For implant planning, it is not enough to ask whether “there is bone”. It is important to understand where the bone is, how much volume is available, what quality it has, which anatomical structures must be respected and what type of prosthetic restoration it needs to support.
When bone volume is reduced, implant treatment can become more complex or may not be advisable without preparation. In these cases, bone reconstruction may help create more favourable conditions. Whether this is appropriate must always be assessed individually.
Techniques for Dental Bone Regeneration
There are different techniques to rebuild or increase missing bone. The choice depends on the bone defect, the area to be treated, the number of missing teeth, the stability of the soft tissues and the final prosthetic plan.
In some cases, protective membranes, titanium meshes or resorbable membranes are used. Bone material or bone substitute material may be placed beneath these structures to support the formation of new bone tissue over time.
Materials may include:
- Autogenous Bone Graft: Bone taken from the patient, for example from an area of the lower jaw or, in more complex cases, from other sites.
- Biocompatible Bone Substitute Materials Materials such as Biomaterial for bone regeneration, used in dentistry to support bone regeneration in selected cases.
Autogenous bone grafting may be appropriate in some situations, but it is usually a more complex surgical procedure. Biocompatible materials may offer a less invasive alternative in many cases, always depending on diagnosis and individual planning.
Bone Regeneration with biomaterial for bone regeneration
