Dental Cystectomy in Rome Prati

Conservative Treatment and Bone Regeneration

A dental cystectomy is an oral surgery procedure used to remove a cyst in the jaw. The cyst may be periapical, related to the tooth root, dentigerous, related to a tooth, or of another odontogenic origin.

At FreeSmile in Rome Prati, we follow a conservative and carefully planned approach. The aim is to treat the source of infection, support bone healing and preserve healthy teeth and tissues whenever possible.

A cystectomy is recommended only when it appears truly appropriate after careful diagnosis. It becomes part of a personalized treatment plan, supported by a team experienced in complex oral surgery and microsurgical procedures.

Diagnosis and Personalized Planning

The process begins with a careful clinical assessment. This may include tooth vitality testing and precise radiographic examinations.

When needed, we use 3D Imaging / CBCT to evaluate the size, position and anatomical relationships of the lesion.

A correct differential diagnosis between a cyst and other periapical lesions is important. It helps reduce uncertainty, assess recurrence risk and plan a more targeted procedure.

When Cystectomy May Be Indicated

Removal of an odontogenic cyst may be indicated when the lesion should be removed completely, recurrent infections should be prevented or nearby dental and bone structures should be protected.

In larger cases, or when the cyst is close to delicate anatomical structures, a staged approach may be considered. Depending on the case, this may include decompression or marsupialization followed by secondary enucleation.

In some situations, cystectomy may be combined with an apicoectomy, which means removing the root tip of the affected tooth when residual infection is suspected.

How the Procedure Is Performed

Dental cystectomy is usually performed under local anesthesia. For patients who feel particularly anxious, conscious sedation may be discussed when medically appropriate.
The surgeon accesses the affected area using a minimally invasive approach where possible, removes the cyst and carefully cleans the bone cavity.
Depending on the size of the remaining defect, a regenerative biomaterial may be used to support bone regeneration and help restore the structure of the treated area.
The post-operative course is often manageable. Temporary swelling or mild discomfort may occur and is followed according to the individual case.

Possible Benefits of Cystectomy

  • Treatment of the infection source and reduction of recurrence risk
  • Improvement of chewing comfort and function, depending on the initial condition
  • Support for bone and gum healing, especially in visible areas
  • Possible preservation of involved teeth, when clinically appropriate
  • If tooth preservation is not advisable: transparent evaluation of prosthetic or implant options, without unrealistic promises
