Periodontal Disease and Bacteria
The health of our mouth plays a fundamental role in the overall well-being of our body.
Periodontal disease, also known as periodontitis, is a common infectious disease caused by microorganisms. It can appear in varying degrees of severity and is often underestimated.
An infection of the tooth’s supporting tissues can lead to a significant transient bacteremia, meaning numerous bacteria from the mouth begin circulating in the bloodstream. For this reason, it is essential to reduce the bacterial load and inflammation. By treating the gums, we can decrease the amount of bacteria that enter the bloodstream.
Periodontal Disease and Other Body Conditions
It is scientifically proven that periodontal disease is linked to various bodily diseases. It affects the metabolism of sugars and fats. Additionally, it can lead to adverse pregnancy outcomes, such as preterm birth or low birth weight, and increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases. In such cases, bacteria from the mouth have even been found in blood vessels and the heart. Controlling periodontal disease is essential for preventing and treating systemic conditions.
Prevention of Periodontal Disease
Promoting healthy lifestyles is increasingly important. At Freesmile, we recommend regular dental checkups, proper oral hygiene, and a balanced diet. During our first visit, we also conduct a specific periodontal exam to assess the health of the gums.
