Have you had cavities and received a dental filling? Did you know that old amalgam fillings contain mercury, a toxic substance for your health? If so, read the following article, which describes the main techniques and materials used for fillings…

What is a Dental Filling?

A dental filling is a technique that involves filling the cavity that forms inside a tooth after the removal of decayed dental tissue.
When enamel is eroded by acidic foods and attacked by oral bacteria, cavities begin to form. If left untreated, the cavity progresses to the dentin, creating voids and eventually destroying the pulp (nerve). At this point, the dentist must remove the decayed tissue along with any infected material.

Materials for Fillings

A dental filling can be made using various materials and techniques, depending on the patient’s needs. In the past, amalgam was commonly used, but it was later discovered that this material is toxic and harmful to human health (World Health Organization).
Today, fillings are made from a variety of materials, including composite and porcelain.
The most common filling material is composite. This material is typically chosen because it allows the filling to match the natural color of the tooth. It is made from composite resin particles and is placed in the cavity immediately after the decayed tissue has been removed.

Porcelain Inlays

Another technique used for fillings is porcelain inlays. An inlay is made from a biocompatible material with high aesthetic value and is more durable over time compared to composite restorations. At Freesmile, we mostly use ceramic for this technique.
