What is peri-implantitis?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Peri-implantitis is an infection that develops around a dental implant. This type of bacterial\u00a0infection takes hold in the bone tissue that stabilises the implant, and it can lead to loss of the implant itself.<\/p>\n

In much the same way as occurs with periodontitis, which results in the destruction of the bone structure supporting the tooth, peri-implantitis undermines the support apparatus of the implant. Therefore, if a dental implant cases pain or moves, it is important to have it examined right away.<\/p>\n

Causes of peri-implantitis<\/strong><\/p>\n

The cause of peri-implantitis is the presence of bacteria that results in the deterioration of the implant\u2019s support apparatus. At first the infection affects the gums, then it moves deeper, causing resorption of the bone. Here too, as in the case of periodontitis, pockets are formed, providing sites where bacteria gather.\u00a0The condition can cause pain in the area around the dental implant.<\/p>\n

The bacterial attack can occur follow the implant procedure, when sterility protocols are not followed. Implantology is an extremely complex operation, and it must be carried out in accordance with a number of very important considerations.
